What does crawl depth mean in the link depth report?

The link depth report shows most of my pages are at depth 3-4. Is that good or bad? What's the recommended maximum depth for SEO?

Crawl depth is the minimum number of clicks from the homepage to reach a page. Lower is better.

Google's crawlers follow links, so pages buried at depth 5+ may not be crawled frequently or may receive very little PageRank. The general guideline:

• Depth 1-2: homepage and main category pages (well-linked)
• Depth 3-4: acceptable for most content pages
• Depth 5+: problematic for important pages — consider adding hub links

Don't panic about blog posts at depth 4 — focus on improving depth for your commercial/transactional pages.

Quick tip for anyone confused about orphans: filter out your pagination pages first (URLs with ?page= or /page/2/ patterns). These often show as orphans because the canonical points away from them, but they're not really missing links — they're just correctly de-indexed. Focus the orphan fix on unique content URLs only.
