How many blog posts should link to a money page?

Post by gary_w »

I've been building up a blog to support my main service pages. Is there a rule of thumb for how many blog posts I need to link from to meaningfully move the needle on a service page's internal PageRank?

There's no magic number — it depends on the PageRank of the linking pages. Five links from high-traffic hub pages beat fifty links from low-traffic deep posts.

Use LinkJuice to measure: add 5 contextual internal links from your highest-PageRank blog posts to the target service page. Re-run the analysis after your next crawl. If the target page's internal PageRank increases by 0.3+, the linking volume is working. If not, you need either more links or links from stronger source pages.

Totally agree with the above. I'd also look at the outgoing links from your strongest pages. If your homepage links to 200+ things it loses focus. Cutting that list to 30-40 links concentrating on commercial pages made a noticeable difference for us.

Just adding a data point: we did this analysis for an 80,000-page e-commerce site and the run time was under 2 minutes in Chrome. No issues at all. The orphan detection alone saved us probably 15 hours of manual audit work.
